About

About us
Geospatial for Greater Good.

We founded MIERUNE in 2016, out of Hokkaido's geospatial open-source community,

because we saw something the industry was underusing: location data, and how much more of it the world was starting to produce.

Our conviction was straightforward. This data holds enormous potential, and in the right hands it can change how society works — how cities are planned, how services reach people, how decisions get made.

Turning that potential into real results is the work we set out to do.

Since then, MIERUNE has grown into a team of engineers and specialists who share that ambition.

We build the products, solutions, and expertise that put geospatial data to work for our clients,

and we contribute back to the open-source ecosystem that made us possible.

We are only at the start of what this technology can do.

Geospatial for Greater Good.

Values

Our values
(01)
Be Ambitious Aim High
We are a team of geospatial technology specialists from Hokkaido. We set out to build services that lead the field, to keep taking on hard problems, and to work at the edge of what geospatial technology can do — with the intent of creating new industries, not only serving existing ones.
(02)
Beyond, Together Go Far Together
We are a commercial company with roots in open source. We work closely with one another, alongside our clients, and across a wide range of industries. One idea drives us: if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.
(03)
Enjoy The Journey! Enjoy the Journey!
We are a team that values genuine, self-driven motivation. We believe a readiness to say "let's try it" is the best fuel there is, and we turn the mix of strengths each person brings into momentum that keeps the work — and the adventure — moving forward.

Yasunori Kirimoto 桐本 靖規
Representative Director & CEO Co-Founder and CEO

Yasunori Kirimoto has worked in the geospatial field since 2004. After roles at a specialist GIS company and a construction consultancy, he co-founded MIERUNE in 2016. He served as CTO and then COO before taking his current role as Representative Director and CEO, leading the company overall.

A licensed surveyor and Senior GIS Engineer, he draws on more than 20 years of experience with geospatial data and applications to drive MIERUNE's growth on both the technical and business sides.

An early advocate for using AWS in the geospatial field, he was named an AWS Hero in 2022 — the first person in Japan to receive the honor in the DevTools category. He also helped launch the MapLibre User Group Japan, and continues to support the growth of the geospatial industry and the open-source community.

He serves as a Code for Japan Fellow and a Special Supporter of the Geospatial Information Lab at Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), building partnerships with local governments, companies, and communities nationwide and working across research, government, and industry to balance public value with sustainability.

He has also served as an open-source committee member at the Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA) and on the Digital Agency's recommended-datasets committee, contributing to the standardization, policy design, and real-world adoption of open data and open source, with geospatial information at the core. He is a visiting lecturer at Rakuno Gakuen University.

Toru Mori 森 亮
Executive Director Executive Director

After working at a mapping company and a US GIS vendor, Toru Mori founded Orkney Inc. in 2002 to build an open-source GIS business. From 2017 he worked in Apple's Maps division in the United States, and later led product development for the Japanese market at HERE Technologies.

He joined MIERUNE's management in 2019 and, since 2025, has served as a full-time Executive Director responsible for business planning and product development.

He has contributed significantly to the spread of open-source GIS software in Japan — founding the OSGeo Japan chapter and leading the Japanese localization project for QGIS — and was certified as an Honorary Senior GIS Engineer in 2023. He serves as an auditor of OSGeo Japan and is a part-time lecturer at Aoyama Gakuin University.
